In order to control and ultimately eradicate TSE’s, there is a requirement for highly sensitive, rapid testing procedures that can allow accurate detection of the prion protein in its abnormal state. The Enfer TSE Assay was the first TSE assay to be developed and commercialised, testing for Irish supermarket chain SuperValu/Centra from January 1, 1998. The advent of rapid tests now presents the scientific community with the opportunity to rapidly identify large numbers of both clinical and pre-clinical cases of TSE, the ultimate aim being to safeguard the consumer from infected meat.
